Sig Sauer Introduces the New P385

On September 22, 2026, SIG Sauer introduced an entirely new pistol platform called the P385 at its SIG NEXT event. Unlike another variation of the P320 or P365, the P385 uses a new fire-control unit and several new design features. SIG says the pistol will begin reaching dealers during the fall and early winter of 2026. (Sig Sauer)

For shooters considering a new handgun, the P385 is interesting because SIG appears to be combining the modular approach of its existing pistols with a redesigned recoil system.

A New Fire-Control Unit

One of the biggest features of the P385 is its removable fire-control unit, or FCU.

The basic idea should be familiar to owners of other modular SIG pistols. The serialized component is contained within the FCU rather than permanently tied to a particular grip module. This allows the pistol to be configured with different components while retaining the same serialized firearm.

SIG has also developed what it calls the MagStrap grip module for the P385. The system is intended to allow changes in grip length and hand fit.

The important point for current SIG owners is that the P385 is a new platform. Owners should not assume that P320 or P365 internal parts, grip modules, holsters, or other components will work with the P385 simply because the pistols share some design concepts. We know the keyboard warriors on the Internet are already saying this uses a P365 FCU, but this is not the case.

A Different Approach to Recoil

SIG is also introducing a new Recoil Dampening System with the P385.

According to the company, the combination of this system and a low bore axis reduces muzzle rise by at least 20 percent, depending on the P385 model. That figure comes from SIG’s own testing and should be considered a manufacturer claim until more independent testing of production pistols becomes available. (Sig Sauer)

Reduced muzzle movement can make it easier to return the sights to the target after firing. How noticeable the difference will be for an individual shooter will depend on the particular P385 configuration, ammunition and shooting technique.

Five P385 Models Are Planned

SIG has announced five versions of the pistol: the P385-MACH3D, P385-COMP, P385-FULL, P385-CARRY and P385-COMPACT.

All models are striker-fired and will be offered in black or coyote brown. SIG says the pistols will have fully ambidextrous controls and an optional manual thumb safety.

The slides will also use SIG’s SIG-LOC optic system. Anyone planning to install an existing red-dot sight should verify mounting compatibility before purchasing an optic or mounting hardware.

Don’t Assume Parts Compatibility

New firearm platforms often generate an aftermarket quickly, but owners should be cautious during the first few months after a release.

A part that looks similar does not necessarily mean it fits correctly. Springs, internal components and mounting hardware should be verified for the exact pistol model before installation.

The same applies to holsters. Small differences in the trigger guard, slide or frame can affect retention and trigger coverage. A holster should specifically list compatibility with the P385 before it is used for carry.

What We Will Be Watching

The P385 is scheduled to begin appearing in stores this fall and early winter. As production pistols reach shooters, we should begin getting a clearer picture of reliability, parts availability and aftermarket support.

The new FCU and recoil system make the P385 more than another cosmetic variation of an existing SIG pistol. Whether those changes provide meaningful advantages will become easier to evaluate once the pistols have accumulated significant round counts outside factory testing.

For now, it is one of the more significant new handgun introductions of 2026.
