Releasing Soon!
GLOCK has officially introduced the Gen6 platform, and while it may look familiar at first glance, this is not a cosmetic refresh. From a gunsmith’s perspective, Gen6 represents one of the most deliberate ergonomic and functional updates Glock has made since Gen4 — with several changes that directly affect handling, long-term durability, and service considerations.
At StrikePoint Gunsmithing, we evaluate new platforms based on what actually matters over thousands of rounds, not just launch-day specs. Here’s what Gen6 means for shooters, concealed carriers, and duty users.
Ergonomics Finally Catch Up to Shooter Feedback
One of the biggest takeaways with Gen6 is that Glock clearly listened to years of shooter input.
The revised grip geometry incorporates a subtle palm swell and an improved undercut trigger guard. These changes allow for a higher, more consistent grip — something we see shooters struggle with on earlier generations, especially during rapid strings of fire or recoil management drills.
The new RTF6 grip texture strikes a better balance between control and comfort. It offers more surface contact without the overly aggressive feel that caused discomfort for some shooters on earlier rough-textured frames. From a maintenance standpoint, this texture also appears less prone to excessive wear from holsters and daily carry.
The extended beavertail is another practical upgrade. Slide bite complaints were rare on Gen5, but Gen6 provides additional insurance for shooters with larger hands or higher grip styles.
Slide & Control Refinements That Matter in Real Use
Gen6 slide serrations are deeper and more assertive, making press checks and slide manipulations more positive — especially with gloves or wet hands.
Glock also addressed accidental slide-lock engagement by adding a raised border around the slide stop lever. This is a small change, but one that addresses a real issue we see on the bench when shooters unknowingly ride the slide stop under recoil.
These are the kinds of refinements that don’t show up on spec sheets, but absolutely show up in training and defensive use.
Flat-Faced Trigger: Consistency Over Gimmicks
Gen6 introduces a factory flat-faced trigger, and Glock made the right choice by focusing on consistency, not pull-weight marketing.
From a gunsmithing perspective:
- Trigger geometry promotes more repeatable finger placement
- Maintains Glock’s Safe Action® reliability
- Avoids the reliability issues commonly seen with aftermarket trigger kits
As always, StrikePoint Gunsmithing does not recommend reduced-power trigger components for defensive firearms. Glock’s factory system is designed to balance ignition reliability and safety, and Gen6 continues that philosophy.
Gen6 Optics Ready System: A Long-Overdue Improvement
Every standard-frame Gen6 pistol ships optic-ready from the factory, with three included optic plates.
This matters because:
- Factory-cut slides help preserve structural integrity
- Plate fit and screw engagement are more consistent
- Less need for aftermarket milling that can introduce tolerance issues
For shooters running red dots on duty or defensive pistols, this is a clear improvement over earlier MOS implementations.
What You Get Out of the Box
Each Gen6 pistol includes:
- Gen6 Safe Action® pistol
- Three magazines
- Magazine loader
- Cleaning kit
- Backstrap set
- Three optic mounting plates
- Glock hard case
This makes Gen6 a complete, ready-to-run platform with minimal immediate upgrades required.
A Gunsmith’s Perspective: Evolution Done Right
Gen6 is not a reinvention — and that’s a good thing.
Internally, Glock has retained the proven striker-fired architecture that has built its reputation for reliability. Externally, the improvements are meaningful, shooter-focused, and practical. From what we’re seeing so far, Gen6 addresses many of the ergonomic complaints without introducing unnecessary complexity.
As with any defensive firearm, routine inspection, spring maintenance, and proper lubrication remain critical, regardless of generation.
